Extended String Techniques and Notation (For Instrumentalists and Composers)
Extended String Techniques and Notation (For Instrumentalists and Composers)
In this series of lectures, I will show how some of the contemporary string techniques are played and notated in the score. I will show score examples as well as performer tricks on how to solve certain issues.
Techniques will include standard techniques like sub ponticello playing, bartok pizzicato and col legno playing as well as more advanced techniques such as overpressure, circular bowing and instrument preparation.
We will also study and analyze solo works for violin, viola and cello from 1950 to today.
For participant composers, I will look at notation and examples in their own individual scores. We will discuss performance options and I can play excerpts of a new work. Pieces do not have to be written for violin solo. Any scores that use a string instrument are open for discussion.
This course can be for string players and/or composers.
