Introduction:
Christopher Halls is a former professional violinist whose major focus was in the field of early music performance. As a freelancer he understood the importance of adaptability and nurturing connections when embarking on a career in music. He graduated from the Victorian College of the Arts (now the University of Melbourne) where his teacher Spiros Rantos helped pave the way for violin studies in Vienna. There, his passion for early music performance was soon sparked during classes with Professor Eduard Melkus at the University of Music and Performing Arts in Vienna, and from intensive lessons with his mentor, the highly-respected violinist and early music specialist Professor Hiro Kurosaki.
Amongst numerous projects in Europe and America, Chris’s regular performances with The Haydn Academy in Austria (culminating in a series of Haydn’s complete symphonies at the Esterhazy Palace) and his frequent guest appearances back home with the Australian Brandenburg Orchestra, both played a significant part in the career diversity that he enjoyed whilst finding his niche in the freelance world.
When adaptability was put to the extreme test and a serious car accident put an abrupt end to his professional violinistic intentions, Chris - musically down but not out - continued to teach both language and violin, and soon began writing classical concert reviews in Vienna for the Wiener Zeitung, Austria’s oldest newspaper. His writing angle, seen through the eyes of a performer rather than those of a musicologist, has proven to be both successful and rewarding, leading to regular contributions for Bachtrack online and his many concert reviews and articles for the South China Morning Post in Hong Kong, where he currently resides.
