Introduction:
Known for his versatile style and flair across disciplines in both unusual works and standard repertoire, American conductor David Levi has graced the podiums of opera, ballet, concert and recording companies throughout Europe, South America and the U.S. He is a graduate of Harvard University with a degree in Psychology who later studied piano, conducting, chamber music and vocal accompaniment at The Manhattan School of Music.
Mo Levi’s early experience began in various German opera houses where, notably, he conducted new productions of Shostakovich's The Nose, directed by Harry Kupfer and Sondheim's Sweeney Todd.
In 1989 he created the Spanga Opera Festival founded in The Netherlands along with stage director Corina van Eijk. There he conducted many opera productions including The Rake's Progress, Ariadne auf Naxios Aida, and Il trittico. In addition, he conducted the soundtracks for Rigoletto, Samson and Delilah and Donna Giovanna. His debut with the Opera di Roma was with the European première of A View From the Bridge by William Bolcom.
In addition to his critically acclaimed recording of South Pacific with Ferruccio Furlanetto and Marjana Lipovsek, and Anatevka for the Mörbisch Seefestspiele, he also conducted the film music for Une vie à t’attendre and Le héros de la famille, preparing Cathérine Deneuve and Emmanuelle Béart for their roles.
He was Chorus Master of the Paris Opera from 1997 – 2002.
David's passion has turned increasingly towards ballet in recent years, with productions of Romeo e Giulietta (Ballet of the Rome Opera), Petrushka and Firebird (Vienna State Ballet) and Napoli, La Sylphide and Ballo della Regina (Royal Danish Ballet). His performance of Stravinsky's Concerto in D with the New York City Ballet at Lincoln Center in New York City was hailed by the New York Times as “one of the finest in years".
In 2015 he founded TerrOpéra in the Southwest of France, where he has lived since 2013. His productions of A Soldier's Tale (2016) , La Voix Humaine (2017) and Les Fantastiques (2019) have had both a public and critical success. As pianist, has produced many chamber music programs (including Winterreise in 2019) and is happy to be producing very soon the first internationally available of recording of Leokadiya Kashperova's First Cello Sonata.
He also continues to lead choral projects with the French public schools and conservatories in Paris and Marseille, including a recent concert version of Hair.
