Gregory Carreño

Introduction:

Clarinetist, pedagogue, orchestra and choir’s conductor. Gregory Carreño belongs to one of the most important musical families in Venezuela, graduated from the Venezuelan music school and conservatory, he obtained the titles of Clarinet Performing Professor and Music Professor with honorable mentions. He studied composition, orchestral conducting and analysis of form with the Masters José Antonio Abreu and Juan Bautista Carreño.

Carreño went to the School of Music of the Universidad Nacional Autónoma of Mexico UNAM Choral and Orchestral Direction, under the guidance of the Maestro Enrique Ribó. He also graduated from the Latin American Academy for Orchestra Directors of the Inter-American Center for Musical Studies (CIDEM).

Carreño belongs to the generation called by Maestro José Antonio Abreu in 1975 to found the National Youth Orchestra of Venezuela and it is from there that the development of an intense musical activity of artistic consolidation and training begins, becoming a national benchmark, consolidating, founding and strengthening the Orchestral and Choral movement in Venezuela.

Maestro Carreño has been invited to direct the most important Symphonic Orchestras of Venezuela and Latin America and throughout his career he has received innumerable recognitions and distinctions, among which the Cristóbal Mendoza Order conferred by the Trujillo State Government in in 1995, Francisco de Miranda Order granted by the Government of the Miranda State in 2014 and recognition as a founding member of the National System of Orchestras and Choirs of Venezuela, granted by maestro José Antonio Abreu.

In 2019 and 2020 he was invited as teacher of the Chair of Orchestral Conducting and Director of the Symphony Orchestra of the International Music Festival of Santa Catarina FEMUSC in the City of Jaragua do Sul in Brazil.

As a founding member of El Sistema, he has been a fundamental pillar in the pedagogical training not only of children and young people but also in the training of the Orchestral and Coral de los Núcleos teaching staff throughout the country, thus consolidating the Mission and Vision of El Sistema throughout the national territory.

During all Carreño’s career he has been the principal conductor of the Symphonic Bands of the Nueva Esparta and Trujillo States, as well as director and founder of the Aragua State Philharmonic Choirs and the Trujillo State and Miranda State Philharmonic Choirs.  He served as titular conductor of the Trujillo State Symphony Orchestra and the Miranda State Symphony Orchestra, Director of the Foundation for the Miranda State Youth and Children's Orchestra, Director of the Los Teques Nucleus, teacher of the National Chair of Analysis and Orchestral Direction of the Teacher Training Program

In turn, Mr. Carreño has been a regional manager of Los Altos Mirandinos de los Núcleos de Orquestas y Coros and a member of the Musical Academic Council of El Sistema de Orquestas y Coros Infantiles y Juveniles de Venezuela.

Since his recent move to Florida, he continues his pedagogical and training work by conducting tutorials and master classes in Choral and Orchestral Conducting to young conductors from Venezuela and Latinamerica and founded the Plantation Chamber Orchestra.
